1
Days 1–2: Guwahati — gateway to the Northeast
Start in Guwahati, the region's hub. The hilltop Kamakhya temple, sort your Arunachal Inner Line Permit (needed for Tawang) here or online, and stock up — last big city before the hills.
📍 Guwahati, Assam
2
Days 3–4: Shillong — hill-station base
Drive south into Meghalaya to Shillong (~3 hrs). A base for Umiam Lake, the local markets, and a day-trip to the Mawphlang sacred forest. Cooler and greener than the plains.
📍 Shillong, Meghalaya
3
Days 5–6: Cherrapunji — root bridges & waterfalls
On to Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on earth. The trek to the Nongriat double-decker living root bridge is the highlight; Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters falls thunder in the monsoon. Mind the weather window.
📍 Cherrapunji, Meghalaya
4
Days 7–8: Kaziranga — one-horned rhinos
Loop back through Guwahati and east to Kaziranga (~5 hrs). A dawn jeep or elephant safari is the way to spot the one-horned rhino, wild buffalo, and if you're lucky a tiger. Book the safari and zone permits a day ahead.
📍 Kaziranga (Kohora), Assam
5
Days 9–10: Dirang — the road to Tawang
North into Arunachal, breaking the long Tawang drive at Dirang — a calm valley town with apple orchards, a hot spring, and an old dzong. A good place to rest before the high Sela Pass.
📍 Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh
6
Days 11–14: Tawang — monastery & Sela Pass
Cross the 13,700 ft Sela Pass into Tawang. The vast 17th-century monastery is the headline; add Madhuri Lake, the war memorial, and the Bumla border if your permit allows. Days 13–14 for the long drive back to Guwahati.
📍 Tawang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh
